Joan Poteet Kask has worked at the University of California, Berkeley for more than 25 years in positions covering student affairs, research administration, program planning, curriculum development, financial administration, and human resources. All of these positions have been involved with international studies in some manner, including roles as Assistant Dean for Administration of International and Area Studies and Assistant Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies. Joan holds a Master of Arts in Asian Studies from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from California State University at Long Beach.

She spent her study abroad year in Taichung, Taiwan. She has studied Chinese at the advanced level, Japanese at the beginning level, and has a reading knowledge of French. Joan enjoys reading, jazz, painting and drawing, and bird watching.
