LAS 10 : Introduction to Latin American Studies (4 units)
Prerequisites: None
Offered Fall Only
This course is intended as a lower division, interdisciplinary core course for students planning to pursue the Latin American Studies major, as well as other interested students. The aim is to provide an introduction to the field that integrates the offerings from the various disciplines. Particular attention will be given to the analysis of the relationship between cultural expression and the politics, economy, and history of the region.
LAS 24 : Freshman Seminar (1 unit)
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor
The Freshman Seminar Program has been designed to provide new students with the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member in a small seminar setting. Freshman seminars are offered in all campus departments, and topics vary from department to department and semester to semester. Enrollment is limited to 15 freshmen. Sections 1-2 to be graded on a letter-grade basis. Sections 3-4 to be graded on a passed/not passed basis. Course may be repeated for credit as topic varies.
Upper Division Courses
LAS 130 : Cross-Listed Topics (1-4 units)
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor
This course is designed to accommodate cross-listed courses offered through other departments, the content of which is applicable to majors. Content and unit values vary from course to course. Course may be repeated for credit.
LAS 150 : Advanced Studies in Latin American Studies (4 units)
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor
Advanced research in current issues or regions of Latin American Studies. The course will focus on specific areas or topics with appropriate comparative material included. Topics change each semester. Course may be repeated for credit.
LAS 192 : Senior Thesis (3-4 units)
Prerequisites: Senior standing
This course is designed to provide a vehicle for undergraduate students who do not participate in the departmental honors program but are interested in writing a major paper on a Latin American studies topic. The paper should be approximately 30-50 pages in length; the topic must be agreed upon in advance by both the students and faculty sponsor. Requires weekly consultations with faculty sponsor.
LAS H195 : Senior Honors Thesis Seminar (4 units)
Prerequisites: IAS H102; senior standing with a minimum GPA of 3.6 in the major and a 3.5 for all work completed at the University; consent of instructor
The honors student is required to research and write a thesis based on the prospectus developed in International and Area Studies H102. The thesis work is reviewed by the honors instructor and a second reader to be selected based on the thesis topic. Weekly reports required.
LAS 197 : Field Studies (1-4 units)
Prerequisites: Upper division standing and consent of instructor
Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. Supervised experience relevant to specific aspects of Latin American Studies in off-campus organizations. Regular individual meetings with faculty sponsor and written reports required. Check with the Group Major Office for specific requirements. Course may be repeated for credit.
LAS 198 : Directed Group Study (1-4 units)
Prerequisites: Upper division standing and consent of instructor
Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. Student initiated group study. Topics vary from semester to semester. Check with the Group Major Office for topics and specific enrollment requirements. Course may be repeated for credit.
LAS 199 : Supervised Independent Study and Research for Undergraduates (1-4 units)
Prerequisites: Consent of instructor
Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. Written proposal must be approved by a faculty advisor. Enrollment is restricted by regulations of the College of Letters and Science. Check with the IAS Office for enrollment information. Course may be repeated for credit.
