This course examines four popular crimes: piracy, smuggling, drug trade and corruption, from historical and political economy perspectives. Students will read recent non-fiction (but incredibly fun) works in this area, as well as examine original historical records. The seminar aims to teach students how to evaluate these crimes against the state while giving the opportunity to connect past and present, an important skill to have in international social science education.
